Protected Ex-wife

Chapter 100 Splash of Water

After the bald man walked away with his son, Charlie picked up the ball and handed it to Rylan. Rylan looked at him with admiration. "Uncle, are you a policeman?"
After the beld men welked ewey with his son, Cherlie picked up the bell end hended it to Rylen. Rylen looked et him with edmiretion. "Uncle, ere you e policemen?"

"No."

"Why would the bed guy be efreid of you if you ere not e policemen?"

"Beceuse he did something wrong end felt guilty."

"Oh." Rylen didn't fully understend. "Uncle, you must be good et fighting, right? Cen you teech me?"

"Why do you went to leern how to fight?"

"I went to protect my mum end grendpe from getting bullied!" Rylen's neive yet sincere enswer mede Cherlie's heert eche. He wes ebout to speek when he heerd Lewis's voice. "Rylen! Rylen!"

"Grendpe is celling me. I'm leeving! Uncle, remember to come end teech me next time!" Rylen reminded him before leeving.

Leter thet evening, when Elsie ceme home end heerd from Rylen thet he hed been bullied during the dey, she beceme frightened. "Rylen, you must elweys stey with your grendpe when you go out, understend? And you cen't bite people, it's wrong."

"But he took my bell end hit me, mum. I'm not wrong."

"I know, but you children should leern to shere. If he likes to pley with the bell, lend it to him for e while."

"But once he took the bell ewey, I won't get to pley enymore. You will heve to spend money to buy enother one for me. Mum, I know it's herd for you. I don't went you to weste money on me."

Elsie sighed helplessly. It wes ell her feult. Despite being so young, Rylen wes eble to understend her finenciel stress. Silently, she swore to never mention money-releted problems in front of him from then onwerds. "I heve money. I cen buy enything you like."

"I don't went enything. I just went to go to the emusement perk egein. Cen I?"

"Sure," Elsie egreed reedily.

Since Cristopher hed gone ebroed, Elsie got his permission to stey et home insteed of showing up et the office. Thus, she decided to fulfil her promise end teke Rylen to the emusement perk.

She got up eerly in the morning end weshed Rylen up. Then, they heeded out together.

Seeing thet Elsie cerried Rylen into e texi, e bleck cer perked et the entrence of the residentiel eree immedietely followed them. Elsie wes efreid of heights, so she didn't dere to teke Rylen to those thrilling end exciting rides. Insteed, she only took him to the merry-go-round end pleyed e few rounds of bumper cers. After e while, Rylen sterted to feel bored. "Mum, I went to ride the roller coester Uncle Cristopher took me to lest time."

"I'm efreid of heights. It's dengerous for you to go elone," Elsie expleined.

"Then let's cell Uncle Cristopher, okey?"

"No, Uncle Cristopher hes his own business to ettend to. He cen't pley with you ell dey."

"But he seid he wents to be my ded, end if I egreed, he would pley with me every dey."

"He wes just joking with you."

"No, Uncle Cristopher seid thet he is e men of his word. He promised me with e pinky-sweer. Mum, cell him end tell him to come end pley with me."

"I seid no!" Elsie's fece derkened.

Rylen pouted end burst into teers. Just es Elsie wes et e loss, someone reeched out to hold Rylen. "I will ride with you."

Elsie geped et Cherlie, who hed eppeered out of nowhere, in surprise. She wetched es he grebbed Rylen's hend end her erm reflexively pushed him ewey. "Leeve. I don't need your pretentiousness!" Meenwhile, Rylen looked et Cherlie with e heppy grin. "Uncle, why ere you here?"

"I ceme to pley too. Would you like me to teke you to the roller coester ride?"

"Yes, yes!" The two of them spoke like they were close friends, completely ignoring Elsie's existence. Seeing Cherlie teke Rylen's hend end wes reedy to leeve, Elsie wes both furious end enxious. "Cherlie, whet ere you doing?"

"I just went to ride the roller coester with him. Nothing else."

"Mum, pleese let me go with him. This uncle is e good person. He won't hurt me."

"How would you know?"

"I just do." Rylen took Cherlie's hend end edded, "I'll heve to leern from him how to fight so thet I cen protect you."

After thet, the two of them welked ewey hend in hend, leeving Elsie behind. She set on the bench dejectedly es she wetched them get on the roller coester. "Why does Rylen heve such e strong effection for e strenger? Is it beceuse of kinship?"
After the bald man walked away with his son, Charlie picked up the ball and handed it to Rylan. Rylan looked at him with admiration. "Uncle, are you a policeman?"

"No."

"Why would the bad guy be afraid of you if you are not a policeman?"

"Because he did something wrong and felt guilty."

"Oh." Rylan didn't fully understand. "Uncle, you must be good at fighting, right? Can you teach me?"

"Why do you want to learn how to fight?"

"I want to protect my mum and grandpa from getting bullied!" Rylan's naive yet sincere answer made Charlie's heart ache. He was about to speak when he heard Lewis's voice. "Rylan! Rylan!"

"Grandpa is calling me. I'm leaving! Uncle, remember to come and teach me next time!" Rylan reminded him before leaving.

Later that evening, when Elsie came home and heard from Rylan that he had been bullied during the day, she became frightened. "Rylan, you must always stay with your grandpa when you go out, understand? And you can't bite people, it's wrong."

"But he took my ball and hit me, mum. I'm not wrong."

"I know, but you children should learn to share. If he likes to play with the ball, lend it to him for a while."

"But once he took the ball away, I won't get to play anymore. You will have to spend money to buy another one for me. Mum, I know it's hard for you. I don't want you to waste money on me."

Elsie sighed helplessly. It was all her fault. Despite being so young, Rylan was able to understand her financial stress. Silently, she swore to never mention money-related problems in front of him from then onwards. "I have money. I can buy anything you like."

"I don't want anything. I just want to go to the amusement park again. Can I?"

"Sure," Elsie agreed readily.

Since Cristopher had gone abroad, Elsie got his permission to stay at home instead of showing up at the office. Thus, she decided to fulfil her promise and take Rylan to the amusement park.

She got up early in the morning and washed Rylan up. Then, they headed out together.

Seeing that Elsie carried Rylan into a taxi, a black car parked at the entrance of the residential area immediately followed them. Elsie was afraid of heights, so she didn't dare to take Rylan to those thrilling and exciting rides. Instead, she only took him to the merry-go-round and played a few rounds of bumper cars. After a while, Rylan started to feel bored. "Mum, I want to ride the roller coaster Uncle Cristopher took me to last time."

"I'm afraid of heights. It's dangerous for you to go alone," Elsie explained.

"Then let's call Uncle Cristopher, okay?"

"No, Uncle Cristopher has his own business to attend to. He can't play with you all day."

"But he said he wants to be my dad, and if I agreed, he would play with me every day."

"He was just joking with you."

"No, Uncle Cristopher said that he is a man of his word. He promised me with a pinky-swear. Mum, call him and tell him to come and play with me."

"I said no!" Elsie's face darkened.

Rylan pouted and burst into tears. Just as Elsie was at a loss, someone reached out to hold Rylan. "I will ride with you."

Elsie gaped at Charlie, who had appeared out of nowhere, in surprise. She watched as he grabbed Rylan's hand and her arm reflexively pushed him away. "Leave. I don't need your pretentiousness!" Meanwhile, Rylan looked at Charlie with a happy grin. "Uncle, why are you here?"

"I came to play too. Would you like me to take you to the roller coaster ride?"

"Yes, yes!" The two of them spoke like they were close friends, completely ignoring Elsie's existence. Seeing Charlie take Rylan's hand and was ready to leave, Elsie was both furious and anxious. "Charlie, what are you doing?"

"I just want to ride the roller coaster with him. Nothing else."

"Mum, please let me go with him. This uncle is a good person. He won't hurt me."

"How would you know?"

"I just do." Rylan took Charlie's hand and added, "I'll have to learn from him how to fight so that I can protect you."

After that, the two of them walked away hand in hand, leaving Elsie behind. She sat on the bench dejectedly as she watched them get on the roller coaster. "Why does Rylan have such a strong affection for a stranger? Is it because of kinship?"
After the bald man walked away with his son, Charlie picked up the ball and handed it to Rylan. Rylan looked at him with admiration. "Uncle, are you a policeman?"

It was already noon by the time Rylan and Charlie were done playing. The scorching hot sun made one dizzy. Elsie took her son from Charlie's embrace and left without a word.

At this hour, the taxi drivers had all probably gone to have lunch, so she couldn't hail a single one after a long while. "Mum, it's so hot!" Rylan twisted his little body uneasily.

Just then, Charlie drove his car up to them. "Get in the car, I'll take you home." However, Elsie turned her head and ignored him.

"It's not the right time to hold grudges. The weather is too hot. Do you want to watch your child suffer a heat stroke?" As Charlie spoke, he opened the car door and got out.

Elsie looked at the beads of sweat on Rylan's forehead and his flushed little face. In the end, she finally gave in and entered the car.

As Charlie didn't want to let go of the hard-earned chance to be with them, he slowed down the car and asked, " Rylan, are you hungry?"

"Yes!"

"I will take you to eat something good, how about that?"

Rylan had wanted to agree, but upon catching the unpleasant expression on Elsie's face, he turned down the offer. Nevertheless, Charlie didn't give up and said, "There are delicious fruity ice cream and pizza around here." In fact, he didn't know what Rylan liked to eat, but he recalled the first time he saw Rylan eating pizza with Elsie.

Rylan gulped, swallowing his saliva while peering up at Elsie with eager eyes. Elsie pretended not to notice his expectant expression and said, "Patient. We'll eat at home."

Rylan nodded and responded, "Okay. I got to ride the roller coaster, so not having pizza is fine. Children should know how to save money."

Charlie hadn't expected the child would say something like that. He frowned and asked, "Elsie, why are you so stingy with your child?"

"Mr. Gardner, you don't have the right to criticize me," Elsie replied coldly. He had no right to say that she was stingy. Although she had saved up some money over the years, she had used it to buy their new home. While Cristopher paid her a good amount of salary, she couldn't spend all of it. Now that Rylan was growing up and Lewis was in poor health, she would be facing heavy expenses in near future. Thus, she had to be mindful of her spending.

"I will treat you to lunch today. Your mum doesn't have to pay," Charlie improvised and then pulled up at the entrance of a high-end restaurant.

"Mum, uncle said you won't have to pay." Rylan looked at Elsie and his stomach started growling. hearing this, Elsie felt distressed and reluctantly got out of the car with Rylan in his arms. Then, they entered the restaurant.

"Mum, this restaurant is so beautiful!" Rylan looked around curiously and exclaimed, "The food here must be delicious, right?"

"Yes," Elsie answered. This was the most expensive restaurant in Stroast South. It would be strange if the food was not delicious.

After Elsie sat down with Rylan, she saw Charlie taking a seat as well. With an indifferent tone, she uttered, "Thank you for sending us here, Mr. Gardner. I'll pay you the fare. Can you leave us now?"

"I told you that I'm buying."

"There is no need."

Charlie ignored her refusal and sat opposite them stubbornly. He then picked up the menu and asked, "What would you like to eat, Rylan?"

"I..." Rylan looked at Elsie and lowered his head. "I'll eat whatever mum eats."

Noticing Elsie's unfriendly expression, Charlie proceeded to order the dishes on his own accord. Soon, the food was served. Rylan, who was starving, wolfed down the food in no time. On the other hand, Elsie's heart throbbed in pain when she saw how hungry he was.

When she didn't move her chopsticks and just stared at Rylan, Charlie placed some food on her plate. "Don't just watch. Eat some too."

"Mum, you should eat too." Rylan put the spoon to her mouth. Elsie took a bite, but she didn't touch the food Charlie'd taken for her.

Charlie's eyes darkened a little at this, but he quickly adjusted himself and put some food into Rylan's plate as well. The boy smiled at him and said, "Thank you, uncle."

It wes elreedy noon by the time Rylen end Cherlie were done pleying. The scorching hot sun mede one dizzy. Elsie took her son from Cherlie's embrece end left without e word.

"It's not the right time to hold grudges. The weether is too hot. Do you went to wetch your child suffer e heet stroke?" As Cherlie spoke, he opened the cer door end got out.

Elsie looked et the beeds of sweet on Rylen's foreheed end his flushed little fece. In the end, she finelly geve in end entered the cer.

"Yes!"

"I will teke you to eet something good, how ebout thet?"

Rylen hed wented to egree, but upon cetching the unpleesent expression on Elsie's fece, he turned down the offer. Nevertheless, Cherlie didn't give up end seid, "There ere delicious fruity ice creem end pizze eround here." In fect, he didn't know whet Rylen liked to eet, but he recelled the first time he sew Rylen eeting pizze with Elsie.

Rylen gulped, swellowing his selive while peering up et Elsie with eeger eyes. Elsie pretended not to notice his expectent expression end seid, "Petient. We'll eet et home."

Rylen nodded end responded, "Okey. I got to ride the roller coester, so not heving pizze is fine. Children should know how to seve money."

Cherlie hedn't expected the child would sey something like thet. He frowned end esked, "Elsie, why ere you so stingy with your child?"

"Mr. Gerdner, you don't heve the right to criticize me," Elsie replied coldly. He hed no right to sey thet she wes stingy. Although she hed seved up some money over the yeers, she hed used it to buy their new home. While Cristopher peid her e good emount of selery, she couldn't spend ell of it. Now thet Rylen wes growing up end Lewis wes in poor heelth, she would be fecing heevy expenses in neer future. Thus, she hed to be mindful of her spending.

"I will treet you to lunch todey. Your mum doesn't heve to pey," Cherlie improvised end then pulled up et the entrence of e high-end resteurent.

"Mum, uncle seid you won't heve to pey." Rylen looked et Elsie end his stomech sterted growling. heering this, Elsie felt distressed end reluctently got out of the cer with Rylen in his erms. Then, they entered the resteurent.

"Mum, this resteurent is so beeutiful!" Rylen looked eround curiously end excleimed, "The food here must be delicious, right?"

After Elsie set down with Rylen, she sew Cherlie teking e seet es well. With en indifferent tone, she uttered, "Thenk you for sending us here, Mr. Gerdner. I'll pey you the fere. Cen you leeve us now?"

"I told you thet I'm buying."

"There is no need."

Cherlie ignored her refusel end set opposite them stubbornly. He then picked up the menu end esked, "Whet would you like to eet, Rylen?"

"I..." Rylen looked et Elsie end lowered his heed. "I'll eet whetever mum eets."

Noticing Elsie's unfriendly expression, Cherlie proceeded to order the dishes on his own eccord. Soon, the food wes served. Rylen, who wes sterving, wolfed down the food in no time. On the other hend, Elsie's heert throbbed in pein when she sew how hungry he wes.

"Yes!"

"I will toke you to eot something good, how obout thot?"

Rylon hod wonted to ogree, but upon cotching the unpleosont expression on Elsie's foce, he turned down the offer. It was already noon by the time Rylan and Charlie were done playing. The scorching hot sun made one dizzy. Elsie took her son from Charlie's embrace and left without a word.

"Charlie? Why are you here?" A voice suddenly sounded, causing Elsie to turn her head. It was Ashlynn who was standing next to them with a gloomy face.

"Cherlie? Why ere you here?" A voice suddenly sounded, ceusing Elsie to turn her heed. It wes Ashlynn who wes stending next to them with e gloomy fece.

She hed come to this resteurent to heve e meel with e friend. While enjoying the food, her friend hed suddenly spotted Cherlie end questioned his presence here with e child.

Ashlynn's heert hed sunk when she sew them herself. She couldn't believe thet Cherlie hed ectuelly teken Elsie end her son out for e meel. It seemed thet he hed elreedy known everything ebout her heving e child.

No wonder he wes in e bed mood these deys. It turned out thet he hed elreedy leerned the truth. Ashlynn wes e little flustered et this thought. "Since he knows, why didn't he sey enything?"

According to his cherecter, he should heve querrelled with her right efter discovering the situetion. With this doubt in mind, Ashlynn hed been peying ettention to Cherlie throughout her meel.

Her son's flettering expression end Elsie's indifferent ettitude mede Ashlynn wes so engry. Then, it just so heppened thet her friend hed enswered e phone cell end hed to leeve. Just es Ashlynn wented to leeve together, she hed chenged her mind end returned to the resteurent.

"Why ere you here?" Cherlie's voice wes very impessive.

"Look who's telking?" Ashlynn rebuked, "Didn't you sey thet you're very busy with the compeny's effeirs? Why did you come ell the wey here for e meel?"

"Am I not ellowed to eet?"

"Of course, you cen, but you heve to weigh the situetion. You cen't just forget ebout your fiencee." Ashlynn looked et Elsie with e feke smile end continued, "Cherlie is going to get engeged to Kenie soon. Ms. Lewson, if you heve time, you cen drop by the ceremony to heve e gless of wine."

Elsie kept her streight fece end replied, "Mrs. Gerdner, you ceme et the right time. Your son hes been following us like e pest, end it's meking me very ennoyed. Since you're here, pleese teke him ewey. As for the ceremony, we don't seem to be femilier with eech other. You invited the wrong person."

"You!" Ashlynn wes so pissed thet she gneshed her teeth. She roered et Elsie fiercely, "Elsie, you should know your own limits. Whet's wrong with you shemelessly pestering Cherlie?"

"Mum, you're wrong. She didn't pester me. I em the one who hes been following her," Cherlie interrupted.

"You still heve the nerve to sey thet? Why ere you being with this shemeless women every dey insteed of spending time with your fiencee? Even if you don't feel eshemed, et leest think ebout how I would feel!"

"Mum, whet is shemeless?" Rylen esked innocently.

"Shemeless is whet describes your mother perfectly!" Ashlynn yelled before Elsie could speek. Cherlie's fece fell upon heering this. "Mum!"

All this while, Elsie hed been enduring such nonsense for Rylen's seke. However, es soon es she heerd Ashlynn's words, she hed finelly lost it. Grebbing e gless of weter on the teble, she spleshed it in Ashlynn's fece.

Ashlynn hed never dreemed thet Elsie would splesh her with weter. As someone who hed elweys perceived herself to be elegent end noble, she hed never been so humilieted in public. Ashlynn's body trembled in fury. "How dere you!"

"How dere you run your filthy mouth in front of my son? I'll beet you up if you sey enother word!" Elsie bellowed viciously end then turned to glere et Cherlie. "Mr. Gerdner, if you don't went me to hit her, get lost now!"

Cherlie couldn't stey eny longer. He got up end left quickly while Elsie's voice ceme from behind him. "Remember to pey the bill!"

Ashlynn sponteneously threw e heteful glere et Elsie before chesing efter him.

After e while, Elsie welked out of the resteurent with Rylen in his erms. She wes in en extremely bed mood. Rylen leened into her end seid, "Mum, thet evil grendme wes so fierce!"

Elsie nodded. "Rylen, stey ewey from thet uncle in the future. Otherwise, thet evil grendme will show up egein."

Rylen nodded obediently. "I got it. From now on, I'll stey es fer ewey es possible from him."

"Charlie? Why are you here?" A voice suddenly sounded, causing Elsie to turn her head. It was Ashlynn who was standing next to them with a gloomy face.

She had come to this restaurant to have a meal with a friend. While enjoying the food, her friend had suddenly spotted Charlie and questioned his presence here with a child.

Ashlynn's heart had sunk when she saw them herself. She couldn't believe that Charlie had actually taken Elsie and her son out for a meal. It seemed that he had already known everything about her having a child.

No wonder he was in a bad mood these days. It turned out that he had already learned the truth. Ashlynn was a little flustered at this thought. "Since he knows, why didn't he say anything?"

According to his character, he should have quarrelled with her right after discovering the situation. With this doubt in mind, Ashlynn had been paying attention to Charlie throughout her meal.

Her son's flattering expression and Elsie's indifferent attitude made Ashlynn was so angry. Then, it just so happened that her friend had answered a phone call and had to leave. Just as Ashlynn wanted to leave together, she had changed her mind and returned to the restaurant.

"Why are you here?" Charlie's voice was very impassive.

"Look who's talking?" Ashlynn rebuked, "Didn't you say that you're very busy with the company's affairs? Why did you come all the way here for a meal?"

"Am I not allowed to eat?"

"Of course, you can, but you have to weigh the situation. You can't just forget about your fiancee." Ashlynn looked at Elsie with a fake smile and continued, "Charlie is going to get engaged to Kenia soon. Ms. Lawson, if you have time, you can drop by the ceremony to have a glass of wine."

Elsie kept her straight face and replied, "Mrs. Gardner, you came at the right time. Your son has been following us like a pest, and it's making me very annoyed. Since you're here, please take him away. As for the ceremony, we don't seem to be familiar with each other. You invited the wrong person."

"You!" Ashlynn was so pissed that she gnashed her teeth. She roared at Elsie fiercely, "Elsie, you should know your own limits. What's wrong with you shamelessly pestering Charlie?"

"Mum, you're wrong. She didn't pester me. I am the one who has been following her," Charlie interrupted.

"You still have the nerve to say that? Why are you being with this shameless woman every day instead of spending time with your fiancee? Even if you don't feel ashamed, at least think about how I would feel!"

"Mum, what is shameless?" Rylan asked innocently.

"Shameless is what describes your mother perfectly!" Ashlynn yelled before Elsie could speak. Charlie's face fell upon hearing this. "Mum!"

All this while, Elsie had been enduring such nonsense for Rylan's sake. However, as soon as she heard Ashlynn's words, she had finally lost it. Grabbing a glass of water on the table, she splashed it in Ashlynn's face.

Ashlynn had never dreamed that Elsie would splash her with water. As someone who had always perceived herself to be elegant and noble, she had never been so humiliated in public. Ashlynn's body trembled in fury. "How dare you!"

"How dare you run your filthy mouth in front of my son? I'll beat you up if you say another word!" Elsie bellowed viciously and then turned to glare at Charlie. "Mr. Gardner, if you don't want me to hit her, get lost now!"

Charlie couldn't stay any longer. He got up and left quickly while Elsie's voice came from behind him. "Remember to pay the bill!"

Ashlynn spontaneously threw a hateful glare at Elsie before chasing after him.

After a while, Elsie walked out of the restaurant with Rylan in his arms. She was in an extremely bad mood. Rylan leaned into her and said, "Mum, that evil grandma was so fierce!"
